Coconut Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Gluten Free Dairy Free Ice Cream |
Alex and I play this little game almost every time we approach the frozen food aisle at the grocery store. You know, the one where he asks me a question even though he knows exactly what the answer will be. We amble down the aisle (or super-sonic speed walk around the mid-aisle displays sending cosmic shockwaves through the store and shattering the tortilla chips if he's feeling antsy and wants to "just get this over with") In any case, despite our speed of approach, he invariably turns to me and says, with such a sly and casual tone, "so, you want to get some ice cream?" UM. So this is the part where I pretend to think about it very seriously, weighing the options, considering the Pure Pantry cookie mix already in the cart. As if this decision is going to either make or break the week. But really, don't most of us need a little more Gluten Free Dairy Free ice cream in our life?
Lunch is sometimes...nontraditional? |
Besides, I know enough about myself to know that if I feel deprived of treats I know I'll enjoy, my little plan will just end up backfiring and not only lead me to frantically grazing my way through the kitchen cabinet but also wallowing on the couch feeling like a total failure. What FUN! So what do I think? I think if you feed a mouse a cookie, there better be enough fat in it to make it worth while. Yes, fat. Fat is what makes treats taste good. Read: treats = things that you eat infrequently and in quantities not to exceed the size of your head. Keep your pea protein and your almond mush and your flax OUT of my snacks. I'm going to stick with So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream.
I know what you're thinking, ugh, coconut, and don't worry - I'll forgive you eventually. But then again, maybe I'm thinking back to 3rd grade where there was a dedicated clutch of anti-coconutters. Maybe you, my readers, have a more refined palate? But let me be honest with you: allowing a perfect pat of this ice cream to smooth its way across your taste buds will prove many things, but above all - you will love coconut milk ice cream

And I truly mean it. I went on the hunt for Dairy Free Ice Cream. Stood in the freezer aisle, freezing. Clouding up the glass as I dug through boring flavor after thin, watery excuse for a frozen treat. My take on all of them? Needs more fat. Coconut milk has more saturated fat that cow's milk (meaning a creamier, more lucious and delectable ice cream) but before you get all crazy on me - coconut milk and oil also offer up anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial goodies, promotes brain development and contribute to healthy bones and has anti-carcinogenic and anti-pathogenic properties. Furthermore, cultures which depend on coconut milk as their main source of fat have been found to be free of heart disease. We could take a page out of their book. Read the whole kaboodle on coconut milk here.
So instead of slurping down your Dairy Free Ice Cream and being reminded, with every scoop, that it's not really ice cream, may I suggest trying something truly delicious? Fact: if I could still eat dairy I would STILL eat this ice cream. Besides all the creamy wonderment and generous chocolate chunks and inventive flavors, one fact remains: GLUTEN FREE DAIRY FREE COOKIE DOUGH ICE CREAM. It's like the unicorn of GFDF desserts. I never thought I'd see the day when both perfect dairy free ice cream and awesome gluten free cookie dough would team up to be the star of my freezer. I feel like I should be accepting an award right now, for being a part of the consumption of such a miraculous combination.
So, a la Reading Rainbow, don't take my word for it. I've found So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream at Whole Foods and most health food stores I've encountered. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I absolutely LOVE So Delicious coconut milk ice cream. The Chocolate and Turtle Trails flavors are as rich and creamy as gelato.
ReplyDeleteThis is totally my favorite ice cream, for the same reasons you said :)
ReplyDeleteI love this stuff, my favorite is mocha almond fudge. Saves my life on a regular basis. For example, right now.
ReplyDeleteThat is one sexy cone of ice cream- er, I mean, coconut milk frozen confection. Beautiful shot! (And I like the simplicity of your new blog design. Very cool.)
ReplyDeleteSuper great ice cream!!!! I also tried Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss in Mint at Whole Foods and that too is yummy!!!!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe it when I saw the GF cookie dough version. Goodness, that was good. So rich. I can eat dairy, and I'd snag it again in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine, City Girl and Jen! What would we do without it!? Happy scooping!
ReplyDeleteThanks Karina, it was slyly grinning at me the whole time I was photographing it - so naturally I had to promptly devour it. Still some tweaking to do on the blog (as always) but I think it looks more fresh - thanks for the feedback!
Hey Kristin, I haven't tried Luna & Larry's - thanks for the tip, I'll have to pick some up :)
Ann, I too was in shock. Delirious, wonderful shock - it's a beautiful thing :) Glad you enjoy it!
Ice cream always tastes better when made with coconut milk, great post thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow a dairy free dessert. I'll have to give this a try for my nephew is allergic to dairy.
ReplyDeleteLook great!
Of course Patty, I love sharing excellent finds! Thanks so much for coming by :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome Triple Scoop, I hope he loves it as much as I do, thanks for coming by!
Would you consider posting "reveiw" with the picture posted on foodgawker so that it's clear there is no recipe in your blog? I got a little too excited at the prospect of making this at home instead of buying it, which I do- love the stuff, but it's pricey and I got disappointed when there was no recipe.
ReplyDeleteI love this stuff too. Although I just discovered hempmilk ice cream at whole foods the other day - and it was pretty darn good too.
ReplyDeleteSorry to get you all worked up Anon, I thought the name of the product in the description would be clear. Maybe someday I will do a coconut milk ice cream recipe. Toodaloo.
ReplyDeleteHempmilk Rach? Interesting...I'm not a fan of straight hempmilk but I'm willing to give that a go! Thanks for the suggestion :)
I finally just really got what the term "food porn" means. That photo is making me drool! So Delicious coconut milk ice cream is soooo good. It doesn't have a weird aftertaste like Luna and Larry's does. I like some of the hemp flavors too (the chocolate mint is really good), but So Delicious is my fave.
ReplyDeleteThanks Christie! Such a compliment :) between you and me - I'm hesitant to even try any other kinds of ice cream since I've found So Delicious - how can it get better?
